MANLEY TO RETIRE AFTER 40 YEARS IN LONG-TERM HEALTH CARE

FOSTORIA, Ohio, March 29--Larry Manley, an owner with his wife, Cheryl Buckland, of Independence House in Fostoria, will retire Sunday (April 1) after 40 years in the long-term care profession.

On April 1, 1967, he purchased Kaltenbach Nursing Home in Weston, Ohio, from his aunt.  He then opened Manley Manor on Main Street in Findlay in 1969.  In 1976 he built Heritage Manor in Findlay, and in 1980 he expanded with the addition of Heritage House.  He sold the Heritage properties in 1985 to his son, Don, and his wife, Karen.

Mr. Manley and Ms. Buckland opened Independence House on Independence Road in 1991.  The Independence House campus includes a 50-bed rehabilitation and long-term care facility.

A native of Holland, Ohio, Mr. Manley first came to Findlay in 1957 as a ministerial student at Findlay College.   He remains a licensed minister who still officiates at weddings and funerals.  Mr. Manley attended Bowling Green State University for one year and graduated with a BA degree in philosophy from the University of Findlay.

Mr. Manley also worked with the state association, the Ohio Health Care Association.  In 1974  Mr. Manley, working through the association, was instrumental in passing a law to require that all long-term care facilities in Ohio be fully sprinkled.  After three disastrous nursing home fires claiming over 100 lives, Ohio was among the first states to require all facilities to require sprinklers.  “There has never been a multiple death fire situation in any building equipped with sprinklers,” Mr. Manley explains.

Today, Mr. Manley is active in the Fostoria community.  He is a member of Fostoria Rotary, the Fostoria Economic Development Corporation, Fostoria Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Hill Top Men’s Club.  He is a past board member of the Ohio Masonic Home.  He and his wife were initial contributors to the Greater Fostoria Community Foundation capital campaign.

They have actively supported downtown revitalization.  They purchased and renovated the Foster Building and the old National Bank Building in downtown Fostoria.

An active fisherman and hunter, Mr. Manley expects to continue to spend time at his beloved wilderness cabin in Canada.
